Mercedes-Benz is not only one of the most iconic and well-known vehicle brands; the company also has one of the most instantly recognizable logos. The logo development process began over a century ago, and the three-pointed star that we all know today has deep roots.
The Logo Development History of Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes and Benz initially began as two distinct car manufacturers, although both were founded in Germany. The first company, founded by Carl Benz, began in the early 1880s. Gottlieb Daimler waited until 1900 to found his company, which was later named Mercedes after a client (who eventually purchased the company) who had a child named Mercedes.
The first version of the logo was simply the word “MERCEDES” encased in an oval and placed on each car. However, Daimler inadvertently created the next when he mailed a postcard to his wife where he drew a three-pointed star on top of his home in Germany. Decades later, his sons remembered his use of the star and decided to use it as the logo for the Mercedes vehicles. The logo development didn’t end there, as the Benz company used its own logo that had a wreath surrounding their name. When the two companies became one, they took the three-pointed star from the Mercedes cars and the wreath from the Benz cars to create a single new logo.
Initially, the logo was blue, but Mercedes-Benz changed to a modern, sleek silver in 1934 in recognition of the first Grand Prix at Nürburgring. The three-pointed star still retains the original meaning that Daimler’s sons associated with it—the goal of Mercedes leading the transportation industry via land, sky and sea.
