When the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a nationwide shutdown in March of 2020, design schools across the country were forced to retool overnight and fundamentally change the way they operated. After over a year of virtual education, many design schools are set to move back to their campuses in the fall. What exactly will design education look like moving forward? We expect these trends from the pandemic to remain part of the future of design education.
Zoom in Design Education
Zoom meetings allowed educators to bring in lecturers and critics from all over the world. This is a practice that students will continue to benefit from! One-on-one meetings with professors will also be a breeze for students and faculty alike moving forward.
Many educators also used Zoom’s breakout features to allow students to provide feedback in more reasonably sized groups. Breakout groups will absolutely be a staple moving forward, and now we have the option to implement them in person or virtually.
Recreating the Virtual Experience
Most people would argue that in-person courses are superior to virtual courses. However, there are actually a few advantages to sticking to the virtual medium. For starters, asynchronous content greatly benefited students throughout the pandemic by providing them with helpful resources they could consume at their own pace.
Additionally, virtual lectures allowed students to easily be seen and heard. Rather than witnessing students dozing off in the back, virtual lectures sparked true debates and genuine conversations for all participants. Hopefully, that experience will empower lecturers to create similarly dynamic in-person experiences this fall.
Altered Course Hours
Many institutions reduced class time for remote learning to make coursework more concise while still granting degree requirements. Generally, this didn’t lead to a compromised education experience. Moving forward, we may see institutions revert back to usual course times but allocate the end of the session for optional in-class working time.
