Moving from the Discovery Phase to the Content Generation Phase with Mood Boards

Before designing anything for our clients, we go through what is referred to as the discovery phase. In this part of the process, we’re simply getting to know the client, their customers and the personality of the business. We want to learn as much as we can about our clients to accurately and effectively represent their brand. That said, it is sometimes hard to transition from discovery to the design phase. That’s where mood boards come in!

What is a Mood Board?

A mood board is a collection of assets from varying sources that represents the values and goals of a given brand. There are no hard and fast rules about what to include on a mood board. Most often, we end up sourcing appropriate fonts, color palettes, shapes and patterns. Once we have a suitable collection, we arrange the assets on one page to create a mood board. This serves as visual inspiration as we move through the project.

Why Do Designers Use Mood Boards?

Creating a mood board helps both designers and clients to visualize a look and feel.

It gives clients the confidence that the design firm has a clear grasp of their vision.
Since this is often the first visual we create, it is easy to make changes at this stage. Once the mood board is tweaked to a client’s liking, it becomes a roadamap and valuable tool for the entire team.
