They are the name behind the iconic bricks you probably spent your childhood stacking (and the ones you dread stepping on as an adult!). They are synonymous with creativity, imagination and dreaming up new possibilities. What are we talking about? Lego! This business name has a history as special as the tiny colorful blocks that they manufacture.

The Origin of the Business Name Lego

The first Legos were designed by a carpenter, Ole Kirk Christiansen, in Denmark. He began by making them out of wood in 1932. In 1934, he started to call the company “Lego,” which is a play on the Danish phrase leg godt, which translates to “play well.” Christiansen did not call all of the toys that the company created Legos, but instead wanted the company name to describe all of the products they produced.

Lego began to take off making plastic toys with the accessibility and affordability of plastic in the late 1940s. In 1949, the object that we know today as a Lego “block” was first created. The bricks were called “automatic binding bricks” initially before they became so strongly associated with the company and were renamed “Legos.”

Lego continued to expand and become more popular internationally under the same business name throughout the 20th century. Today, you can find Legos everywhere from the classroom to your child’s toy chest!
