Just like many of the other logos we’ve covered during our logo development blog series, the LG logo is a staple in many households. From washing machines to refrigerators, the LG logo can be found all around us. How did this logo pass through the development process and become the recognizable symbol we see today?
The Logo Development History of LG
The company we now know as LG was originally founded as Goldstar Electronics in the late 1950s. In 1995, they underwent a major rebranding and changed the name to LG to incorporate their slogan “Life’s Good” using the letters L and G in an emoticon. The emoticon did such a good job hiding the LG that, in 2008, the company added the two initials next to the face and that has become the version now used all the time.
Like the hidden arrow in the FedEx logo, LG wanted a symbol to include both the company name and a reference to their products. Beyond the happy face that signifies “Life’s Good,” the emoticon mimics the power button on many appliances, which works perfectly to relate to the products they create.
The LG logo development process is remarkable because the base of the logo has changed so little over the years. The strong, clean design marries numerous aspects of the business using only two letters, simple shapes and a single color. It shows the power of visual simplicity.
